Celebrating Arab American Heritage

A Spotlight on MFS Staff Member Ranya Khoury

As Arab American Heritage Month continues, we honor the diverse backgrounds and contributions of Arab Americans in our community. One such leader is Ranya Khoury, the MFS Community Schools SUN Site Manager at HB Lee Middle School.

In a recent conversation, Ranya shared insights into her role, her upbringing, and her experience as an Arab American working in education.

From Student to Site Manager

Ranya’s journey with MFS began four years ago. She first served as a program assistant and activity leader before stepping into her current role as SUN Site Manager.

“I actually graduated from Reynolds High School,” Ranya says. “So, it’s kind of full circle to be back working in the district that I graduated from.”

Through collaboration with community partners and culturally specific groups, Ranya has built a vibrant, inclusive program that reflects the spirit of unity at MFS.

Roots in Syria and Lebanon

Growing up in Portland, Ranya’s heritage is deeply connected to her Syrian and Lebanese ancestry.

  • Her father immigrated from Syria nearly 35 years ago.

  • Her mother’s parents were Syrian and Lebanese, though her mother was born in Antigua and raised in Pennsylvania.

  • Together, her parents eventually made their way to Oregon.

This immigrant story shaped Ranya’s values of resilience and determination.

Family of Entrepreneurs

Ranya’s family has also left its mark on Portland’s business community.

“My dad and brothers own EZ Freezy Frozen Yogurt. My aunt owns Rom’s Gyro Grill in Boring. My cousin owns Bar Maven and Bodega PDX on Foster. My family is incredibly hard working and they are one of my greatest inspirations.”

Their food carts, delis, and restaurants reflect not just entrepreneurship, but the rich cultural flavors Arab Americans bring to the region.

Community Connections

For Ranya, the Syrian Lebanese American Club was a formative part of her childhood.

“I didn’t really hang out with friends from school—most of my friends were through that club. The friendships I built there have lasted a lifetime.”

The club provided a space to connect, celebrate traditions, and strengthen cultural identity.

Advocating for Students

In her role at HB Lee, Ranya supports Arabic-speaking students, offering both advocacy and a safe space.

“There have been a couple of kids over the years that find a connection with me and want to build a relationship based on our shared background. I love fostering those relationships because it’s nice to provide my students with a safe place where they can feel comfortable to be themselves.”

She partners with The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) and other groups to run programs specifically for Arabic-speaking students, helping them feel seen and supported.

Addressing Misconceptions

Ranya’s own experiences also fuel her advocacy.

“I was in school when 9/11 happened, and I feel like the world’s perception of the Arab community changed drastically. Having experienced that firsthand, I always do my best to educate students about why using the word ‘terrorist’ as an insult can be so damaging. I don’t want my students to ever have that experience.”

Her efforts emphasize education, compassion, and breaking down harmful stereotypes.

A Call for Curiosity

Ranya hopes more people will take time to learn about Arab culture.

“I don’t think people know a lot about Arab culture in general. It would be cool if people wanted to learn more about the music, food, and traditions we pride ourselves in.”

Celebrating Heritage

As we celebrate Arab American Heritage Month, Ranya’s story reminds us of the resilience, generosity, and cultural pride Arab Americans bring to our shared community. By amplifying voices like hers, we move toward a more inclusive and equitable future.
