Starting in early October Metropolitan Family Service can offer Energy Assistance to help households across our community stay current on essential utility bills including: electric, gas, oil, water, and sewer.

For more than three years, Unitus Community Credit Union has partnered with MFS CASH Oregon to expand free, high-quality tax preparation through the IRS VITA program—helping thousands of families access life-changing refunds and tax credits.

In 2011, Hunger Relief started with simple weekend food backpacks. Today, MFS runs five school-based pantries and brings monthly Free Food Markets to other schools—putting fresh produce and staples directly into families’ hands, right where they already are.

Brown & Brown Insurance recently joined MFS Hunger Relief volunteers to assemble 150 Thanksgiving food bags for local school families at Glenfair Elementary—helping ensure children and caregivers had what they needed heading into the holiday season. Their team jumped in with warmth, energy, and a genuine commitment to community.

Joy, connection, and generosity filled the Portland Art Museum as our community came together to raise $177,856 for MFS programs that build equity and opportunity.

For 30 years, MFS AARP Foundation Experience Corps has connected older adult volunteers with young readers, building confidence, literacy, and lasting relationships. From beloved early tutors like Grandma Cherry to thousands of reading sessions today, this intergenerational program continues to change lives—one student, one story, one connection at a time.

Celebrating 75 years of service, MFS reflects on its legacy and looks ahead to new opportunities for impact in the Portland metro area.

MFS has faced significant challenges that prevent us from operating the Americorps program as intended. We have sunsetted this longstanding and impactful program due to the State AmeriCorps program termination by the current administration on April 25, 2025.

We appreciate the essential roles that our members have played in expanding activities, building capacity, and strengthening all MFS programs for over 15 years. We are grateful for all of our AmeriCorps members who have served our community.
