Rooted in Community: MFS Opens New Gresham Headquarters

After 75 years of serving the Portland metro area, Metropolitan Family Service (MFS) has moved its headquarters to Gresham, marking a new chapter in our ongoing mission to strengthen the community across generations.

Our new home is located in Willbon Plaza, nestled in the Gresham Station area. This move brings us closer to the heart of many of the communities we serve—especially families and partners in East Multnomah County.

MFS currently operates 15 programs across three core focus areas:

  • Early Childhood Development and Youth Success

  • Economic Empowerment

  • Community-Based Health and Wellness

Each program helps advance our mission to promote equity, foster connection, and support people of all ages in achieving well-being and stability.

Since our founding in 1950, MFS has supported more than 24,000 people each year—serving individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds throughout the Portland tri-county area. The move to Gresham is a meaningful shift for our organization and a long-anticipated step for many partners who have seen the growing need for services in East County.

We celebrated this milestone on Thursday, May 1, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. Over 40 guests joined us, including long-time community partners, funders, supporters, and former MFS executive directors Ron Yoder and Krista Larson—each of whom led the agency for 19 years. We were especially honored to welcome Mike Harris, the founder of Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN), a program MFS has proudly participated in since 2006.

CEO Judy Strand expressed heartfelt gratitude during the event:

“It means so much to connect with so many of you who are doing vital work for the good of all in this community. This is a time when we need to lean on each other and remain present and committed to this work in partnership with each other more than ever before.”

Guest speakers included Thea Enos of the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce; Jerry Hinton, Council President of the Gresham City Council; John Koch, Interim Superintendent of the Gresham-Barlow School District; and MFS Board Chair Kevin Spooner. Thea Enos summed it up best:

“Partnerships are at the heart of MFS—whether it’s pairing a child with a senior to practice reading, partnering with accountants to assist non-English speakers with taxes, or helping neighbors access reliable transportation. MFS is a model of collaboration for the greater good.”

MFS CEO Judy Strand cuts the ribbon at our new Gresham headquarters—marking a fresh chapter in our 75-year commitment to community.

MFS’s work is powered by over 2,000 volunteers each year, contributing 70,000 hours of service—an estimated value of $2 million. With support from 400+ public and private partners, our team brings decades of experience from across the nonprofit, education, health, and business sectors. All programs are offered at no cost to participants.

We’re excited to deepen our roots in East County and continue building a more connected, resilient community—one relationship at a time.
